Main Bet: Davis Riley To Win
As the second Major of the year, the US PGA Championship, approaches, many top golfers have opted out of participating in the AT&T Byron Nelson. Injuries have also played a part, with local Texan favorite Jordan Spieth sidelined by a wrist injury.
Nevertheless, Texas golf enthusiasts can still enjoy the presence of 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who is currently the favorite with odds of 10/3. Despite his local ties, Scheffler’s performances at Craig Ranch (47th in 2021 and 15th in 2022) and the possibility of him focusing on next week’s Major make him less attractive at these odds.
TPC Craig Ranch: An Iron Play Haven
TPC Craig Ranch, a 7,414-yard par-71 course, hosted the Korn Ferry Tour Championship in 2008 and 2012. During those tournaments, Greens in Regulation emerged as the most important stat, emphasizing the significance of iron play. This idea was supported last year when five of the top six finishers ranked in the top seven for Strokes Gained: Approach (SGA). Consequently, the PGA Tour’s SGA table serves as a solid starting point for identifying potential contenders.
Spotlight on Davis Riley
Davis Riley, who ranks 25th in Strokes Gained: Approach this season, is a golfer to watch at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Hailing from Mississippi and having attended college in Alabama, Riley often performs well in southern states. This explains his popularity at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina.
Although his putting performance at the Wells Fargo was less than ideal, he has demonstrated the ability to bounce back, as evidenced by his rankings at the Honda and Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year. If he can improve his putting, he has the potential to make an impact at TPC Craig Ranch.
Last year, Riley made his course debut and finished ninth, despite being 107th after 18 holes. He managed to make a comeback with two consecutive rounds of 64 and a closing 67, securing a spot in the top 10. Later, he finished fourth in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial and won the Korn Ferry’s TPC San Antonio Championship in 2020.

Riley’s recent victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, alongside Nick Hardy, showcases his readiness to claim an individual PGA Tour win. As a two-time Korn Ferry Tour champion, he appears capable to make a statement at the AT&T Byron Nelson, making him an appealing option at 40/1 odds.
