I believe he’ll be motivated to maintain his positive trend, and it’s not out of the question that a strong October will lead to his maiden appearance in the ATP Finals. If he wins this week, he will be in the running with 500 points.

We have some big names here, like Stefanos Tsitsipas, ANDREY RUBLEV, and Hubert Hurkacz. It’s not difficult to argue for any of these if you are prepared to challenge Alcaraz, but I’m going to attempt Rublev.

Undoubtedly, a few of you will disagree. I am aware that he has occasionally disappointed in major competitions in the past, and some may add his recent US Open quarterfinal defeat to Frances Tiafoe to that list. However, there was also a lot to enjoy in New York, and Rublev has already achieved success on a hard surface this year by winning in Dubai and reaching the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters.
Rublev has won 5 of these 500-level tournaments in the past 25 months, and while none have been as competitive as this one, he does have a respectable record versus other top-10 players. His win-loss record against them is 3-2 this year and 15-15 overall since the beginning of 2019.
That’s definitely good for someone who hasn’t made it into the top four. He does have the strength to compete with people like Alcaraz in the slower conditions, which should suit him (they haven’t met yet).
On hardcourts, Rublev also had 4-2 and 2-1 leads over Tsitsipas and Hurkacz. Motivation is also strong because of the ATP Finals spot up for grabs. In my opinion, a small amount to back the Russian in what appears to be a highly competitive competition is, in my opinion, justified.
