The allure of tennis becomes even more compelling when it transitions from clay to grass courts. This week marks that phase at ATP Stuttgart, where seven of the world’s top 20, along with Nick Kyrgios, last year’s Wimbledon finalist, return to action. While the headliners will steal most of the limelight, the real opportunity lies in exploring the overlooked gems on the grass court.

The Grass-court Advantage

What makes this competition particularly intriguing is the grass court itself. While some critics argue that the variation in tennis courts is diminishing, the grass court continues to maintain its distinctive charm and challenge. It requires a different skill set compared to clay or hard courts, a fact that often perplexes even the top-tier players.

Consider Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed for Stuttgart. His record on grass is not as commendable as on other surfaces. Despite having a grass court title from last season in Mallorca, his performance against the top 20 players on grass and his history at Wimbledon leave a lot to be desired. The Stuttgart competition might be the stage where Tsitsipas’s backhand deficiencies come to light, making him a precarious choice despite being the 9/2 favourite.

Beyond the Headlines: The Unsung Champions

Other familiar names, such as Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, often take time to acclimatise to the grass surface. Similarly, Matteo Berrettini and Kyrgios, both making comebacks post-injuries and known for their exceptional grass court performances, seem like risky choices considering their hiatus from the court.

The odds seem to favour Hubert Hurkacz among the market leaders. A Halle champion and Wimbledon semi-finalist, Hurkacz’s serves are potent weapons on the grass court. His best performances this season have been on faster surfaces, including a title win in Marseille and a last-16 finish at the Australian Open. However, despite his strong credentials, betting on him at 8/1 seems a bit uncertain.

Lorenzo Sonego: The Dark Horse

The real game-changer, however, could be Lorenzo Sonego. A potential threat to the two-time champion Berrettini, Sonego could make a strong case right from round one. With a grass court title in Antalya in 2019 and a runner-up finish at Eastbourne in 2021, Sonego’s grass court capabilities are well established.

Adding to this, he ranks in the top 15 for service games won this season, a vital asset for the grass surface, which could lead to tie-breaks against Berrettini and possibly Hurkacz. Sonego’s morale will be on the high following his strong French Open performance, where he outplayed Andrey Rublev to reach the last 16.

The Italian, currently ranked 48, could turn out to be the tournament’s dark horse. Therefore, a small bet on Sonego, standing at 18/1, might prove to be a worthwhile gamble in the ATP Stuttgart event. As the world watches the known champions, the real excitement lies in uncovering the potential of the dark horses.

Tennis fans are spoiled for choice with another significant grass court event slated in Rosmalen, commonly known as Den Bosch. While the top seeds, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, are likely contenders, their prohibitive odds make them less enticing to back.

The Top Seeds: Strengths and Weaknesses

Between the two top seeds, Medvedev seemingly presents a stronger case. With three finals in his last five grass court tournaments and a win in Mallorca in 2021, his prowess on grass is well-established. However, his unattractive odds of 2/1, coupled with a likely first round against the adept Adrian Mannarino, raise doubts over backing him. Mannarino, who won in Rosmalen in 2019 and made the semi-finals last year, is an attractive prospect at 50/1 in the outright market.

Sinner, despite leading the formidable Novak Djokovic by two sets at Wimbledon last year, lacks an impressive record on grass at the tour level. His odds at 7/2 might be less appealing when considering his limited victories on grass, affirming that one stellar performance does not equate to consistent success.

Ugo Humbert: A Potent Challenger

Moving beyond the top seeds, it’s worth shedding light on Ugo Humbert. His formidable lefty serve and knack for net approaches make him a perfect fit for grass. His record is testament to this; he clinched the Halle title in 2021 and has strong showings at Wimbledon, Newport, and Stuttgart. Humbert’s potential outshines those around him, making his odds of 25/1 particularly enticing. Besides Sinner, Alex de Minaur and Tallon Griekspoor are other seeds in the weaker bottom half, adding to Humbert’s appeal.

Maxime Cressy: An Unconventional Bet

Taking on Medvedev in the top half is Maxime Cressy. Despite a less-than-ideal season, the shift to grass could be the rejuvenating change he needs. His imposing serve is a force on the grass court, as demonstrated by his runner-up finish at Eastbourne and his Newport title in 2022.

Cressy’s serve-oriented game has led to at least one tie-break in 13 of his 19 matches this season, reflecting his ability to frustrate opponents. Given that grass court matches often hinge on a few crucial points, taking a chance on Cressy to regain his form could pay dividends.

In conclusion, Rosmalen could prove a breeding ground for surprise contenders. It’s less about the usual suspects and more about those who possess the unique skills to master the grass court.
