Expected fast conditions in Montreal

Even though the top seeds with first-round byes won’t begin their tournaments until most likely Wednesday, play has started in Canada on Monday. With service points won, service hold %, and aces per game counts well above ATP Tour hard court average, the conditions are anticipated to be rather fast-paced.

Kyrgios will be a difficult challenge for Medvedev

The tournament favorite and top seed, Daniil Medvedev, is expected to thrive under these circumstances. After winning at Los Cabos last week, he will be appreciative of a few days of rest, despite the fact that he scarcely pushed himself by dominating all four opponents in straight sets.

This victory will have thrilled Medvedev after a string of recent final losses. He appears to be the clear pre-tournament favorite; our only doubt comes from Nick Kyrgios’ potential danger in round two.

The first quarter of the tournament, which features Medvedev and Kyrgios as well as players like Denis Shapovalov, Alex De Minaur, and Hubert Hurkacz, could have been simpler for the tournament favorite; with a better draw, we could easily have imagined him at a significant lower price.

Casper Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime are the seeded participants in Q2, which has several large servers participating in the third quarter. The pair will probably face tough competition from extremely capable opponents like Roberto Bautista-Agut, Jenson Brooksby, and Los Cabos runner-up Cameron Norrie. It wouldn’t shock us in the slightest if any of the unseeded competitors in this bracket advanced at least to the semifinals.

Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas receive byes in the third bracket, which also appears to be rather tough. A prospective Tsitsipas/Cressy round 3 match could be a tiebreak opportunity. Matteo Berrettini, a further big server who should enjoy the fast conditions and whose serve will be difficult to break, and Maxime Cressy should make sure that there are a few multi – variate spots in this quarter.

The second participant in single-digit pricing is Alcaraz.
Fourth-quarter leaders include Andy Murray, who entered as a wild card, as well as Andrey Rublev and Carlos Alcaraz. One of the tougher round one opponents for the Scotsman is Taylor Fritz, and he will begin the match as the outsider against the American.

Alcaraz is the only player with a pre-match price in the single digits (6.0), but I have my doubts about his prospects in these fast-paced conditions.

Berrettini, one of the players with no first-round bye, could have a shot in these circumstances, despite the fact that his first matchup is against the difficult Pablo Carreno-Busta. The event does, however, appear to be Medvedev’s to lose, and should he defeat Kyrgios in round two, I may see a significant decline in his overall price.
