These are a few difficult draws, but the Austrian has had better luck in Gijon, where the seeds in his quarter are Francisco Cerundolo and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, two athletes who greatly like the feel of clay beneath their feet, and I believe that he has a great chance to gain traction and advance. Rublev might make this appear like another semi-final loser, but I’m not quite sold on the Russian this week, making it worthwhile to place a tiny bet on Thiem at 12/1.

At nearby Forli, where he has already made himself at home, he finished second indoors on the Challenger Tour earlier this season. The Dutchman won 86% of the points after his first serve and went undefeated in his two qualifying matches while smashing down 34 aces.
Even though there wasn’t much competition, those are excellent scores, and once the main draw begins—beginning with Mikael Ymer—I can see him troubling bigger players. In the second round, he won’t have to worry about Tallon Griekspoor or Aslan Karatsev, and Berrettini might be waiting in a serve-heavy quarterfinal.
