Favorites and Form

While traditionally favouring the underdog before a Grand Slam, there’s a temptation to lean towards the favourites this time around, particularly in the case of Cam Norrie. As the defending champion of the Lyon Open, with a runner-up finish in 2021 and a semi-final place in 2018, Norrie has proven his prowess at this event.

However, the pre-Grand Slam tournament period often incites caution among top players who want to avoid fatigue or risk injury. Norrie’s recent on-court treatment for a suspected hip flexor problem during the Rome tournament exemplifies such concerns and makes his 7/2 odds less appealing.

Top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime also presents a doubtful prospect. Despite reaching the Lyon final four years ago, his performance on European clay courts has not been convincing. With this in mind, the top half of the draw appears to be wide open, with contenders like Brandon Nakashima and veteran Richard Gasquet alongside Tommy Paul, who has been performing well on the Challenger Tour.

Long Shot Predictions

This open field provides the perfect backdrop for a surprise contender, and Gregoire Barrere appears to fit the bill. Though the Frenchman hasn’t made it to an ATP final yet, his recent performances on clay courts have been noteworthy.

He enjoyed a triumphant run in his home country this season, boasting a quarterfinal appearance in Marseille and a Challenger Tour victory in Quimper. His consistency in France, coupled with his recently achieved career-high ranking, paints a promising picture for the Lyon tournament.

The Bottom Half

Shifting focus to the bottom half, Francisco Cerundolo has been impressing on European clay. His victories over Norrie in Monte Carlo, Ruud in Barcelona, and Jannik Sinner en route to the Rome quarterfinals signal his ability to secure big wins.

Though there might be apprehensions about his intention to conserve energy for the forthcoming French Open, his fourth-seed bye into the second round here means he needs only four victories to clinch the title. Therefore, if motivation aligns with ambition, Cerundolo, with odds of 6/1, could emerge victorious.

Defending Champions and Doubts

The Geneva Open boasts a remarkable track record of star players performing well right before a Grand Slam event. Casper Ruud, the tournament’s two-time defending champion, certainly fits this description. After a semi-final appearance in Rome with improved form, Ruud might justify his odds of 13/5. However, concerns linger around the Norwegian’s desire to endure another potentially gruelling series of matches ahead of the French Open, particularly after a disappointing loss to Holger Rune in Rome.

Players to Watch

Alex Zverev, the 2019 winner of this tournament, shows signs of recovering from an ankle injury sustained during last year’s French Open. Despite noteworthy performances during the claycourt season, including losses to top-tier players such as Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz, Zverev’s odds of 15/4 leave room for doubt among potential backers.

An interesting contender to consider is Dusan Lajovic. Following a successful claycourt performance in Banja Luka and Madrid, Lajovic seems well-suited to adapt to the higher altitude conditions in Geneva. Despite a potentially challenging path to the finals, Lajovic’s odds of 18/1 could offer good value.

The Bottom Half and Potential Surprises

Taylor Fritz, expected by bookmakers to make it to the final, has seen his strong claycourt performance fade recently. Despite disappointing losses, Fritz could potentially regain momentum due to a favourable draw.

However, another player worth considering is Christopher O’Connell. With a recent upward trajectory in his career, including a quarterfinal place in Marrakech and a semi-final in Munich, O’Connell has proven his adaptability to high-altitude conditions. A notable serving performance combined with a fair draw makes his odds of 33/1 an intriguing proposition.
