The week’s main event takes place in Montpellier, where all eight seeds are top-50 players. Holger Rune, the ninth-ranked player in the world, is leading the field. Jannik Sinner, another top-20 player, is also there.
It’s not hard to make a case for either guy, since they both did well at the recent Australian Open, even though they both lost in the round of 16 in five-set matches. I’m not sure whether this is the best week to buy the favorites at relatively low prices, however. The higher-level competition in Rotterdam the following week has both men enrolled. Rune should get extra attention because he has already played in three Davis Cup rubbers since Melbourne, where he helped Denmark win. Another reason I’m willing to challenge him is because I expect a challenging opening.

During the indoor swing in the previous fall, Marc-Andrea Huesler uprooted a few trees, including the triumph in Sofia. The Swiss come into this match fresh off of two significant Davis Cup wins, one of which was against Alex Zverev and contributed to his country’s unexpected 3-2 victory in Germany over the weekend. He should be well-prepared for the job at hand this week thanks to his expertise working in indoor settings, and the venue’s customarily quick pace should work. Last week, Huesler’s outstanding serve wasn’t at its best, but he still managed to hammer down a couple aces. In these circumstances, I’d anticipate it doing more damage. Huesler will play Rune if he manages to defeat Luca van Assche in the first round.
Huesler defeated the Dane in the Sofia final by maintaining his serve the whole match. He also defeated him on clay in Bastad earlier this year, giving him a 2-0 head-to-head advantage. Straight sets were used to win both games. As a result, at 28/1, I’m willing to take a chance on the Swiss superstar.

Carballes Baena faces fellow countryman and seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round, but our man has a 5-1 (4-1 on clay) advantage in their head-to-head record, including the last three meetings, all of which took place during the previous calendar year.
