When Michael O’Neill was in charge of his second game as manager of Northern Ireland back in 2012, it ended with a 6-0 win for the Netherlands. That Dutch team then went on and finished at the bottom of the Euro 2012 group. For O’Neill that defeat was the start of a difficult period.
Since re-joining the Green and White Army O’Neill has done a fantastic job. He has taken Northern Ireland to the Euro 2016 and also to the playoffs of the World Cup. Will he be able to get revenge and deliver a shocking win in Rotterdam on Thursday night?
Last month we saw a clear display of how strong the Netherlands are. They secured back to back wins and are now just within three points from the top two. By winning against Northern Ireland they will move into qualification places, hurting the Green and White army ambitions of making it to the Euro 2020 this summer.
The Irish have won their first four games of this qualifying campaign, but in their last encounter, they have been defeated by Germany at home. In that display, it was clear that there was a clear gap between them and the Germans and the feeling is that more of the same might happen tonight. If the Dutch side can win in front of their fans, they will join the top two on 12 points. On the other hand, with a surprise win Northern Ireland will be in pole position to qualify to next summer finals.
The Dutch have already played against Germany twice so the remaining games look comfortable. The Ulstermen have managed to record away wins with Estonia and Belarus in this campaign, but before that, they had massive problems when travelling. Before the two mentioned trips, they have failed to score in seven away games and also lost to Austria in the Nations League.
We believe the hosts will be too strong for Nothern Ireland, even if the visitors have started their campaign in shining-mode. The Dutch are in form and have top players, and what they have done to Belarus, France and Germany might just be the start. They have also looked solid at the back winning their last four home games to nil so backing them to get a win to nil looks a solid betting prospect.
Goals Market Prediction
Both Teams to score No looks a very valuable proposition considering how solid the Netherlands have been at home and the relatively bad record of NI on the road.
