The ATP Tour’s clay-court season is now in full swing, and the headline for this week’s Monte-Carlo Masters is the absence of Rafael Nadal, who has dominated this event in the last few years. Not surprisingly, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the even-money favourite, but his recent form and history at this venue suggest we look for value elsewhere. The Serb is without doubt one of the greatest players of all time, but a 1/1 doesn’t really make me want to take that risk. He hasn’t played competitively for six weeks now and hasn’t been seen on a clay court since May last year. Additionally, his record at Monte Carlo since 2015 is pretty bad, with six losses in 13 matches.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is also interesting and has to be considered, as he is the back-to-back champion in the past two years. Since the Australian Open, when he reached the final, he has been struggling for consistency, and his odds of 7/1 aren’t so attractive. Surely the change in surface could see the Greek’s form make a return, but I would expect better odds considering how shaky he has looked since leaving Australia.

Further down in the market we find Daniil Medvedev, who, despite winning recently, has always struggled on clay. Raising star Jannik Sinner also is not appealing at 11/1 considering that he has had physical challenges.

A much more intriguing option is Cameron Norrie, who can be backed at 50/1. Despite showing his best tennis on hard courts, he has improved on clay, as proven by the results seen this season. The Brit reached the Buenos Aires final during the South American clay swing in February and also secured the title in Rio de Janeiro. Last year, Norrie also won in Lyon, which means he does have good ability on European clay.

With 21 wins already this season, Norrie could easily be the dark horse in Monte Carlo, given the absence of Nadal and the less-than-perfect conditions of the other main favourites. He will face clay court specialist Francisco Cerundolo in the first round, but the Argentine’s recent clay court form has been underwhelming, with only a shaky 4-3 record this year. If Norrie can get past Cerundolo, we could see him going very deep here, and at this price, he is worth a small stake.
