Following a disappointing start to October yesterday, Steve Ryder previews two races on Monday 2nd October and has an antepost tip for the Dewhurst Stakes. Sept P&L +12.11pts, Oct P&L -5pts so far.
4:10 Bath- Lady Joanna Vassa 7/1 (0.5pt ew)
Lady Joanna Vassa rates an unlikely runner in this race as she won at Musselburgh yesterday but she looks to have a huge chance if allowed to take her chance. She won off a mark of 46 yesterday when making all over 5f on soft ground. She would find the same conditions in this race and would also be able to run off the same handicap mark of 46. She has won off marks as high of 58 in the past so she is well capable of progressing back up to those ratings soon.
5:00 Stratford- Rococo Style 9/2 (0.5pt ew)
A strong mares bumper to conclude the card but I believe a chance is worth taking on Rococo Style for trainer Steve Golings. He booked Richard Johnson to ride on debut and she was well backed into 6/4 and won easily by 9 lengths. The second that day, Snapdragon Fire, wasn’t beaten far on her next start so the form looks to be ok. Richard Johnson keeps the ride on Rococo Style and she should have strong each way claims in an open race.
Dewhurst Stakes- Verbal Dexterity 5/1 (2pt ew)
With the news today that Gustav Klimt misses the race, I think it is worth backing Verbal Dexterity each way in the Dewhurst Stakes which is run on Saturday 14th October. He bolted up on debut at the Curragh over 7f on soft ground by nearly 10 lengths with current Derby favourite The Pentagon down the field in 5th. He then wasn’t suited by the drop down to 6f in the Railway Stakes when beaten only a length by Beckford. He comprehensively turned the tables next time in the National Stakes over 7f beating Beckford by 3 ½ lengths going away at the finish. Trainer Jim Bolger has a fantastic record in the Dewhurst and also a fantastic record in the race with his winner from the National Stakes. Teofilo (2006), New Approach (2007) and Dawn Approach (2012) all completed the double for the trainer who was also successful in the Dewhurst in 2008 with Intense Focus and Parish Hall in 2011. Following his success in the National Stakes, Jim Bolger was full of praise saying that Verbal Dexterity is up there as his best ever 2 year old and the fact that he hasn’t sold him yet (has a strong connection with Godolphin) shows that the trainer is expecting him to run well in the race. Verbal Dexterity has higher RPR and Timeform ratings than Expert Eye and a chance is taken for him to beat the odds on favourite, and if he doesn’t then he looks sure to finish in the top 3.
