We’re leaving an absolutely fantastic 2019 behind us for Liverpool Football Club in a year which saw them become European Champions by winning the Champions League, World Champions in Qatar and sit top of the Premier League with 13 (!) points down to Leicester City at second. And that with a game in hand!

With all that combined you could still actually argue that Sheffield United might have had just as an exceptional year as The Reds. Not only promoted to the top flight again, but also taking the Premier League by storm an establishing themselves on the upper half of the table.

Chris Wilder has done an amazing job with very limited resources and it’s two teams with fantastic results during 2019 that now goes head to head on Anfield for their first game of the new year and decade.

Both Teams Are Coming From Tough Tests

Both teams ended the year with tough battles on December 30, giving them quite exactly the same amount of rest ahead of this one.

Liverpool took a narrow victory against Wolverhampton at Anfield with 1-0 while Sheffield came close but didn’t come away with a cigar at The Etihad, losing 2-0 in the end to the reigning champions.

Liverpool knows that this is looking more and more to be the season when it comes to finally ending the 30 years streak without winning the league title and every victory is taking them closer to that achievement. And they won’t care too much about how it looks down the road to that.

After a fantastic display against Leicester, it was a hard-fought victory against Wolves and we should be expecting a tight and tough game again on Thursday when Wilder’s men come to town.

Not Much Separated Them Last Time

Sheffield held on very good in the home game at Bramall Lane against Liverpool and was only a Dean Henderson mistake away from maybe coming away with a point as well.

They played a low-sitting 5-3-2 and did what they could to hurt on the counters behind Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold rather than building any play from possession.

Liverpool had 71% of possession at Bramall Lane and played over 700 passes compared to Sheffield United that didn’t even reach 300 in total over the game.

We expect Liverpool to come out in control from the beginning at Anfield as well, but we won’t underestimate Sheffield’s way of defending.

Liverpool vs Sheffield United Betting Tips

Corner-Creators?

With the scenario, we’re expecting we can see Liverpool coming forward with their wing-backs but also with Mo Salah and Sadio Mané as threats to Sheffield’s defensive line-up. It should give Liverpool a lot of duels on the wings and we expect a lot of corners to be the outcome of that.

We back Over 9,5 Corners at 4/6.

Our First Verdict: Over 9,5 Corners

With Liverpool looking lively and flying out of their blocks against Leicester (winning 4-0 in the end) it was obvious that they did struggle a bit with their pace against Wolves three days after. They’ve been playing twice a week – at a minimum – for six weeks now and they wouldn’t be human if that didn’t spill over on any of their performances at this point.

With that in mind, Jürgen Klopp will have to decide whether he still back his preferred starting elven to do the job at 95% of their capacity or if this could be a game where he rotates a little to bring on fresh legs from players such as Divock Origi and Xherdan Shagiri – if the latter is back from the knock that ruled him out against Wolves.

Liverpool will also have Takumi Minamino available after his signing from Red Bull Salzburg but expect the Japanese to rather get his first minutes as a red in the weekend against Everton in the FA Cup.

The feeling is that Liverpool at least rotates Naby Keita back in the starting eleven but we should also warn and open a door for at least players like James Milner and Divock Origi. And if you should compare the form on the players in the front three it would probably be Mo Salah who then would be rested on Thursday.

Nothing Between Them After The First 45?

No matter what choice Jürgen Klopp goes with there’s absolutely a chance for Sheffield United to come to Anfield and disturb the World Champions. They fancied their chances against Manchester City on Sunday and will fancy their chances again for this one. They also did hold City to a draw at half time and we’re backing them to do the same against Liverpool.

We back 0-0 at Half Time at 11/4.

Our Second Verdict: Correct Result Half Time 0-0

With the victory against Wolves on Sunday, Liverpool celebrated New Year’s with only one league loss in the whole of 2019 and a total record of 98 points earned from 37 games. And a win on Thursday would mean they’re on 101 points from rolling 38 games. That is, of course, one hell of a testament to what Jürgen Klopp has done with this team and to be quite fair you can’t really see how they would let that Premier League trophy slip from them this season.

It seems the group have promised each other to give their very all in every situation and even though that would sound like nothing but doing their job on this level, it’s hard to say that the same feeling is being spread from some of the other teams in this league.

They also do know their strengths so well and trust their process through every game that a 0-0 draw at half time wouldn’t stress them in a game like this.

The will always keep pushing, keep playing, moving and dig for the chance that they know will come. And I’m sure they’ll find a way to win this in the end as well.

Our final bet is that Liverpool wins it in the end and we back them to win by 2-0.

2-0 on Correct Score market is backed at 6/1.

Our Second Verdict: Correct Score 2-0
