Birdie Bonanza: PGA Tour’s New Norm Continues at TPC Deere Run

The recent trends on the PGA Tour have seen players shooting phenomenally low scores. The Travelers Championship and the Rocket Mortgage Classic were clinched with an impressive 23-under and 24-under respectively. This scorecard dominance seems to continue unabated as we set our sights on the upcoming tournament at TPC Deere Run in Illinois.

A Paradise for Birdie Lovers

As the greens prepare to welcome a fresh bout of golfing action, the scores we’ve seen over the last decade hint towards another potential birdie-fest. With ten of the previous thirteen championships being won with a score of 20-under or better, and the ‘lowest’ winning score standing at 18-under, there’s every reason to anticipate a continuation of the high-scoring trend.

Americans’ Home Ground Advantage

Interestingly, TPC Deere Run seems to be a preferred hunting ground for American golfers. In the last fifteen editions, fourteen have been captured by the homegrown talents, with the only deviation being the 2019 victory by South African golfer Dylan Frittelli.

The course, a par 71 layout spanning 7,289 yards, is a DA Weibring design that opened in 1999. It features Bentgrass greens that provide an additional layer of challenge and intrigue for the participants.

Deciphering the Winning Blueprint

While it would be convenient to assume that winning at TPC Deere Run involves a straightforward formula, the data suggests otherwise. For instance, the champions from 2017 to 2019 all ranked within the top four for Strokes Gained: Putting. However, the 2021 and 2022 winners, Lucas Glover and J.T. Poston respectively, were placed considerably lower in this aspect. Nevertheless, a strategy that involves striking plenty of greens and making the most of birdie opportunities is always a good bet.

Betting on Taylor Moore

Taylor Moore, coming fresh off a splendid performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he provided a profitable each-way return at 50/1, is a strong contender this week. The field this week, led by Cameron Young, Denny McCarthy, and Russell Henley, is noticeably less star-studded than last week’s competition which included Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa.

Moore’s recent turnaround performance came after three missed cuts, indicating his resilient spirit and the effectiveness of his strategy. He attributed his impressive form to a calm mentality and an unwavering belief in his golf swing. He also referenced his victory at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook earlier this season, which has seen four other winners (Jordan Spieth, John Senden, Sean O’Hair, and Vijay Singh) also triumph at TPC Deere Run, reinforcing the correlation.

On his John Deere Classic debut last year, Moore started promisingly before settling for a tied 24th position. Yet, his fond memories from Illinois, including a Korn Ferry victory in 2021, achieved with a stunning 27-under, demonstrate his potential for success on this course.
