Following 3/1 and 9/4 (20p R4) winners yesterday, Steve Ryder previews two races on Thursday 23rd January. P&L -24.45pts.
1:50 Gowran Park- Benie Des Dieux EVENS (3pt)
Benie Des Dieux would be 8/8 since joining Willie Mullins if she hadn’t fallen at the last in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival last year when clear. She returned from the fall to win at the Punchestown Festival before putting in arguably a career best when winning the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil (Grade 1) on her last start. She defeated the French mare De Bon Coeur that day by 6 ½ lengths when upped to 3 miles for the first time with her going further clear at the finish.
It was expected that Benie Des Dieux would go straight to the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on her reappearance but comes here before which must be a sign that she is working well and she should be able to beat Apples’ Jade who hasn’t looked herself this season so far.
6:00 Newcastle- Fuente 5/1 (0.5pt ew)
Fuente ran well on his return from a short break to finish 2nd at Wolverhampton off a mark of 77 where he was only caught late on to be beaten ½ length. He was only raised 1lb for that effort and was well supported into 9/2 in an Amateur Riders’ race at Kempton last time. I am not usually one for criticising a jockey but he was detached in the last pair before making headway down the straight to finish 4th under very tender handling from the jockey.
Fuente now has the services of Joe Fanning aboard who can hopefully get Fuente into a prominent position and he should be involved in the finish.
