Following a poor day yesterday, Steve Ryder previews three races on Sunday 23rd February. P&L -4.33pts.
2:20 Fontwell- Shintori 9/1 (0.5pt ew)
Shintori often doesn’t find much off the bridle as expected but he has been running well on all of his starts this season. He won on his reappearance at Plumpton by just over a length off a mark of 101 before finishing 4th on his next two starts off 106 and 105.
Shintori has dropped down to a mark of 104 which is only 3lb higher than when making a winning reappearance and he should outrun his odds.
2:40 Naas- Valdieu 14/1 (0.5pt ew)
Valdieu won well last time when upped in trip to 2m4f with cheekpieces added last time on handicap debut. He won by half a length off a mark of 123 last time over C&D for which he has earnt a 7lb rise but is now ridden by talented 7lb claimer Eoin Walsh.
With the rider negating his rise in the handicap, and with five places on offer, Valdieu should run well and I find it hard to see him out of the placings.
4:40 Lord Erskine 12/1 (1pt)
Lord Erskine is incredibly well handicapped over hurdles in comparison to his flat form with the main question mark being his return after 579 days off although did win after a 182 day break between the 2017 and 2018 season so we know he can perform well fresh. He is rated 84 on the flat and won twice over hurdles off marks of 87 and 93 in 2018 on his return to this code.
Lord Erskine finished 2nd off a mark of 110 last time but the winner that day Pleasure Dome for Willie Mullins is now rated 21lb higher than in that race. The pair pulled 25 lengths clear of the 3rd so a 6lb rise to 116 is fair and if he is ready to go after a long break then he should be hard to beat.
