Following a poor day yesterday, Steve Ryder previews two races at Ascot on Saturday 18th January. P&L -24.5pts.
2:25 Ascot- Pic D’Orhy 9/2 (1pt)
Pic D’Orhy arrived at Paul Nicholls having had plenty of experience in France for a young horse. He had finished 2nd in a Grade 1 and Grade 2 on his previous starts and Paul Nicholls decided to send him to the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival on his stable debut. Noticeably weak in the market, he travelled well into the race before a mistake 2 out meant he weakened up the hill to finish 10th.
Paul Nicholls sent Pic D’Orhy over to France for his reappearance in a Grade 1 where he was still travelling well at half way when taking a heavy fall. The trainer has always given positive updates about the horse and it seems significant that he has contested two Grade 1s in his two starts for the yard. He now makes his handicap debut off a mark of 146 and with plenty of form on heavy ground, he should go very well.
3:00 Espoir De Guye 3/1 (1pt)
Espoir De Guye has ran well on all three of his starts this season including when 2nd on his reappearance behind Simply The Betts over an inadequate 2 miles. He won easily at Exeter by nearly four lengths before winning for at Ascot on heavy ground over 2m5f. That was an impressive performance to win by 10 lengths eased down and he is worthy of a 14lb rise by the handicapper.
Espoir De Guye has no questions marks about the track, trip or ground and should prove extremely hard to beat.
