Main Bet: Jonathan Caldwell

Not always winning a tournament means that a player will follow up with more positive results. However, the reality is more complicated, and we have seen this with Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell, who won the Scandinavian Mixed in June before missing four straight cuts. Last week he was expected to do well as he was playing in front of friends and family at Galgorm Castle, but couldn’t deliver.

Said that he might have released some pressure, and he will be keen to bounce back this week in Scotland, where he has always played his best golf. Fast running golf is indeed Caldwell’s favourite type of the game, and this is undoubtedly a test that will suit him, so it is worth backing him to thrive once again.

Each Way Bet: Matthew Southgate

Although the price might look a little short for a man that has yet to win his first tournament, there is some value to be found if you consider that he has delivered some great performances on linksland. He might still lack that something to cross the line as the leader, but he finished second behind Jon Rahm at Portstewart in the 2017 Irish Open. He also finished tied sixth at Royal Birkdale in the 2017 Open and second in Scotland behind Victor Perez in the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The last October, he was tied 16th here at Fairmont St Andrews, so fast-running golf is his speciality, and it is heading to this week in decent form. He went very close to win the European Open at Green Eagle and finished in the top 30s at The Renaissance two starts ago. We would stay away from him on normal turf at this price, but there is undoubtedly value in backing him to be in contention on fast-running linksland.
