Steve Ryder previews two races from Newcastle on Friday 29th September follow a 4pt winner yesterday. Despite this 5/4 (4pt) winner yesterday with Ballyandy yesterday, unfortunately Winter is now running in the Arc rather than the Prix De L’Opera so that evens itself out from our antepost tip at 7/1 a week ago (5pt). Sept P&L +11.36pts.
5:45 Newcastle- Astute Boy 6/1 (0.5pt ew)
Astute Boy has been in good form this season with form figures of 2212. He is 10lb higher than the start of the season but has looked progressive and looks to have conditions in his favour in this race. He won a 1m2f handicap at Yarmouth on his penultimate start before going down by ¾ length at Haydock on soft ground last time over 1m6f. He drops back down to 1m4f in this race and is also fitted with first time blinkers which looks a good move as his attitude and head carriage has been questioned this season. Astute Boy looks a rock solid each way bet and hopefully the application of blinkers can mean he can add a second win to his record.
8:15 Newcastle- Jacob Black 33/1 (1pt ew) *price when tipped on twitter
Jacob Black is really well handicapped based on his form as a 3 and 4 year old. He was rated at a high of 95 at his peak following a close second placed effort in a Class 2 handicap at Sandown in June 2015 for Keith Dagleish. He was transferred to Kenny Johnson at the end of the 2016 when still rated 86. He has proved disappointing for his current yard but now contests a Class 6 handicap off a mark of 55. I tipped Jacob Black a couple of weeks ago and despite only finishing 6th from 7, his run was full of encouragement. He was slowly away and detached in last place before making stylish headway 3f out. He then suffered interference when making his challenge and Paddy Aspell didn’t ask a question of him and eased him in the final furlong. He has been well backed overnight on his last two runs, the first he was a NR and on his last run he drifted back out to 20/1 before the off. He has been well backed again, from 33/1 when tipped on twitter ( SteveRyder13) into as short as 8/1. Hopefully his price will remain solid and today is the day he makes use of his generous handicap mark.
