Steve Ryder previews four races around the country on Friday 18th May. P&L +31.36pts.
3:55 Newmarket- Shabeeb 3/1 (1pt)
Shabeeb was a huge eyecatcher last time at Epsom where he finished 4th when sent off 9/2 favourite. He was held up in rear, switched wide into the straight and made good headway at the end of the race finishing a never nearer 6 lengths behind the winner. That was over 1m4f and given that his best career runs have been over 1m5f and 1m6f, this step back up to 1m6f will suit and he should go well.
4:05 York- Master Carpenter 15/2 (0.5pt ew)
Last season, Master Carpenter finished 15th in the Spring Cup before bolting up in this race off a mark of 95. This season he finished 10th in the Spring Cup and gets to run in this race off a mark of 93! He was really impressive in the race last season winning by 5 lengths and also has brilliant York form. He won the John Smith’s Cup off 104 in 2015 and also finished 4th in a C&D handicap off 97 last season. He looks a rock solid each way option in the race with one bookmaker offering 4 places.
5:05 York- Koditime 7/1 (1pt ew)
Koditime makes his handicap debut off a mark of 91 and that looks lenient given his 8th in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and 7th in the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. Clive Cox is in fantastic form this season with 4 winners from his last 12 runners and he has booked Ryan Moore for the ride. Moore has ridden 7 times for Cox in the last 5 years with 4 winners, with a £19 profit from a £1 stake on his rides. He has been well backed and looks sure to go well with a few bookmakers again offering 4 places on the race.
7:00 Hamilton- Jacob Black 5/1 (2pt ew)
Jacob Black is becoming a bit of a cliff horse for me but I would be shocked if he didn’t finish at least in the top 4 here. He was rated as high as 95 in the past in 2015 and tumbled down the weights having switched trainers. He returned to Keith Dagleish on a mark of 49 where he bolted up at Musselburgh and only just failed to follow up under a penalty over C&D last time. He tracked the leader that day and after that rival dropped out he was left clear going well 2f out. He was still over 2 lengths clear entering the final furlong but got lonely late on and got collared on the line. Jacob Black runs here off only 2lb higher and looks sure to hit the frame and I would be disappointed if he didn’t win.
