French Ligue 1 Preview and Betting Tips
Friday 13th – Sunday 15th October
Match Previews and Betting Tips
Last season’s first and second in French Ligue 1 dominate proceedings again this term with big-spending Paris Saint-Germain topping the table by three points from reigning Champions Monaco. Second-placed Monaco have a chance to join PSG at the head of affairs if they can win their Friday night game at Olympique Lyonnais but PSG should easily re-establish their lead with a very comfortable victory over Dijon the following day.
Friday 13th October
Olympique Lyonnais v Monaco. Despite Monaco’s best efforts they cannot seem to make any inroads on Paris Saint-Germain’s lead at the head of the table. Friday’s away game with Olympique Lyonnais gives the current Champions the opportunity to join their biggest rivals at the top of the pile at least for a few hours but an away win is far from being a certainty. By their own high standards, Monaco have been out of sorts lately with a draw and a defeat in the last four games. That said, Lyon have been in even worse form with three draws and a defeat in five matches and will struggle to contain a very good Monaco side this Friday despite home advantage. It may be by just a single goal but Monaco look an excellent bet to claim maximum points at surprisingly good odds of 17/10.
Prediction: Monaco to win
Saturday 14th October
Dijon v Paris Saint-Germain. Dijon have home advantage for their meeting with Paris Saint-Germain but are huge underdogs to win this Saturday’s game at around 25/1. That is probably understandable as PSG have demolished far better sides than Dijon and the home side could be looking at a crushing defeat against the formidable PSG strike force. Even risking a draw at 10/1 looks a foolish bet as PSG should win this game with plenty to spare but unfortunately at extremely short odds of 1/12.
Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain to win
Saint-Etienne v Metz. Down to seventh in the table following a string of disappointing results, Saint-Etienne should return to winning ways in Saturday’s home game against bottom of the table Metz. Having lost seven of eight games played, Metz are two points adrift at the foot of the table and the situation will be a lot worse after Saint-Etienne stroll to a comfortable win at odds of 1/2.
Prediction: Saint-Etienne to win
Sunday 15th October
Bordeaux v Nantes. A home victory for Bordeaux over Nantes on Sunday could possibly see the club move from sixth to third in the Ligue 1 table. However, Nantes are in top form at present with four straight wins behind them and a team in form is always worth following. Despite playing away from home against decent opposition, a win for Nantes must be backed at a very big 7/2.
Prediction: Nantes to win
Strasbourg v Olympique Marseilles. Another team in trouble at the wrong end of the table is Strasbourg who face third-placed Olympique Marseilles on Sunday night. Four defeats in five games is Strasbourg’s record going into the game against Marseilles’ three wins in the last three. Home advantage will be of little benefit to second from bottom Strasbourg as an away win for Marseilles looks nailed-on at 10/11.
Prediction: Olympique Marseilles to win
Montpellier v Nice. Mid-table clubs Montpellier and Nice meet on Sunday in a game that seems to have “draw” written on it. Neither side is in particularly good form of late although Nice did manage to win back to back games recently including a 4-0 victory over reigning Champions Monaco. However, those wins have not been followed up on as Nice have reverted to being an average side. If anything, Nice may shade this match but Montpellier have drawn their last two matches and draw number three looks very likely at odds of 21/10.
Caen v Angers. Draw at 21/10
Guincamp v Rennes. Guincamp to win at 1/1
Lille v Troyes. Troyes to win at 9/2
Toulouse v Amiens. Draw at 12/5
