Match Previews and Betting Tips
Despite losing two of the last four League Two games, Exeter City have established a two point lead at the top of the table and will be looking to extend that advantage on Saturday when they have an away fixture against one of their main challengers Wycombe Wanderers. Should Exeter slip up then Notts County, Luton Town, the aforementioned Wycombe and even Coventry City and Accrington Stanley are poised to take advantage.
Wycombe Wanderers v Exeter City. Four points and three places behind Exeter City in the table, a home win for Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday would be a hugely significant result and a boost to the home side’s title chances. That crucial victory is very achievable as Wycombe are on a winning run of four wins going into this game while Exeter have shown they are beatable having lost two of their last four games. A drawn game would not be a huge surprise but, given Wycombe’s recent results and home advantage, a fifth successive victory for Wanderers is a solid betting proposition at around 6/5.
Prediction: Wycombe Wanderers to win
Notts County v Barnet. Notts County’s title push has come unstuck recently as the team lost and drew their last two matches. Still second in the table, and just two points behind leaders Exeter, Notts County need to return to winning ways and should do so in next Saturday’s home game against a Barnet side that has lost three of the last four matches. A home win for Notts County is the bookies’ favoured result but at surprisingly good odds of 10/11 and is a must-to bet.
Prediction: Notts County to win
Luton Town v Stevenage. Four wins and a draw in five games have seen Luton Town recapture their form and climb to third place in the table. That excellent record goes on the line in Saturday’s home game against a decent Stevenage side whose own good run was surprisingly ended by Crewe Alexandra last weekend. In what should be a very close game, home advantage might just do the trick for Luton Town and the Hatters are a good bet at odds-on 4/7 to extend their winning sequence.
Prediction: Luton Town to win
Accrington Stanley v Coventry City. Another tight game can be expected when sixth-placed Accrington Stanley play host to fifth in the table Coventry City. Both teams have been in good form recently with Coventry performing slightly the better as they have won three and drawn one of their last four games. Accrington were well beaten 2-0 in their last home game but that was by a very good Luton side and an improved performance can be expected on Saturday. Home advantage favours Accrington while form is with Coventry and the two teams could well cancel each other out in a drawn game at 9/4.
Forest Green Rovers v Newport County. Only promoted this season, Forest Green Rovers have not found life easy in the higher division. One victory and eight defeats in twelve games is the club’s record to date as they sit just above the relegation zone and that record should get worse this weekend. Rovers have home advantage but the opponents are Newport County who are eighth in the table. Newport have won three and lost one of the last four games and the game they lost was an understandable defeat by third placed Luton Town. An away win for Newport County has to be the obvious bet and at very nice odds of 11/10.
Prediction: Newport County to win
Mansfield Town v Swindon Town. Two defeats in three games has halted Mansfield Town’s progress up the League Two table and that poor record could well be extended in next Saturday’s home game with Swindon Town. The visitors have also been beaten in two of their last three games but are a capable team on their day and will certainly test Mansfield’s resolve this weekend. An away win for Swindon is not lightly dismissed but a share of the spoils in a drawn game is a more prudent bet at odds of 12/5.
Lincoln City v Cambridge United. As a newly promoted side, Lincoln City have done extremely well in League Two so far this season. Fairly comfortable in tenth place, Lincoln have won five of twelve games played and have a great opportunity to make it six in Saturday’s home game with Cambridge United. Cambridge have a similar record to their hosts but have been beaten in their last two outings as form has dipped. A third successive defeat is likely this Saturday as a home win for Lincoln City looks fairly assured at a nice price of 23/10.
Prediction: Lincoln City to win
Chesterfield v Morecambe. Bottom of the table and desperate for points, Chesterfield really must win this weekend’s home game against fellow strugglers Morecambe who are just three places higher in the League Two standings. That won’t be easy for a team that has now lost five league games in a row but Morecambe haven’t fared much better with three defeats in the last four. A scoreless game would be no great surprise but a draw is certainly a solid looking bet at odds of 5/2.
Port Vale v Cheltenham Town. Another club at the wrong end of the table and in urgent need of points is Port Vale. This weekend Port Vale entertain mid-table Cheltenham Town and yet another defeat looks certain against an in form team. Cheltenham are on a roll with three victories in the last three games while Port Vale have lost their last three. Form and logic dictates an away win for Cheltenham and at very reasonable odds of 6/4.
Prediction: Cheltenham Town to win
Colchester United v Carlisle United. Colchester to win at 5/4
Grimsby Town v Crawley Town. Grimsby to win at 11/10
Yeovil Town v Crewe Alexandra. Draw at 12/5
