Match Previews and Betting Tips
The combinations of results in last weekend’s fixtures saw Wigan Athletic emerge as the new leaders of League One albeit only on goal difference from Shrewsbury Town. Those two clubs have now established a five point lead over the chasing pack and could extend that advantage in midweek as there is a full programme of games on Tuesday night and the joint leaders have very winnable games against Gillingham and Bristol Rovers respectively.
Gillingham v Wigan Athletic. Gillingham registered just a second win of the season when surprisingly beating Peterborough United away from home last Saturday. That rare victory saw the club move up to third from bottom of the table but it should be a return to losing ways when new table-toppers Wigan Athletic are the opponents on Tuesday night. Wigan are on a roll at present having won the last four matches on the bounce and win number five looks a formality in midweek at odds-on 8/15.
Prediction: Wigan Athletic to win
Shrewsbury Town v Bristol Rovers. Two draws in the last two games have cost Shrewsbury Town first spot in the table. Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Plymouth Argyle was one of the team’s most disappointing results this season and an immediate response can be expected in Tuesday’ home game with mid-table Bristol Rovers. In twelfth place, Rovers are a capable side on their day and have managed two wins in their last three games. However, those two victories came against the bottom two clubs in the division and winning at Shrewsbury looks beyond the team’s abilities. At very reasonable odds of 13/10, a home win for Shrewsbury Town is the logical choice and a good bet.
Prediction: Shrewsbury Town to win
Bradford City v Oldham Athletic. Third in the table, but five points behind the leaders, Bradford City were left stunned by last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Bury who were in the bottom three at the time. This Tuesday night Bradford have a home game against another team at the wrong end of the table but it will be a difficult game as opponents Oldham Athletic are in a rich vein of form at present having won their last three games in a row. Those three victories are notable as they all came against teams in the top half of the table and Oldham’s winning streak could well continue in midweek against a Bradford side who have now lost twice in their last four outings. A drawn game might be the most sensible bet but, with Oldham on a roll and Bradford starting to wobble, it may pay to risk an away win for Oldham Athletic at very attractive odds of 4/1.
Prediction: Oldham Athletic to win
AFC Wimbledon v Rotherham United. Three successive wins have propelled Rotherham United up to fourth place and that winning run could well be extended to four at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night. Wimbledon have won just once in the last five games and that was last weekend’s 1-0 victory over fellow bottom four side Northampton Town which doesn’t really amount to much. Rather surprisingly, Rotherham are the underdogs for Tuesday’s match but an away win is a must-do bet at around 8/5.
Prediction: Rotherham United to win
Oxford United v Charlton Athletic. After a fairly lacklustre start to the season, Oxford United have struck form of late and three wins in row have moved the club into the top six. That winning sequence will be put to the test next Tuesday when Oxford have a home game with Charlton Athletic who are one place above their hosts in the table and two points better off. Charlton have also been doing well of late with victories in their last two games and a draw in midweek would hardly be a shock result. However, good form, home advantage and the prospect of leapfrogging Charlton in the table looks a potent combination and enough to see Oxford shade the verdict at odds of 13/10.
Prediction: Oxford United to win
Southend United v Peterborough United. It would seem that the only way is down for Peterborough United at the moment. From title challengers down to seventh place in a matter of three games is Peterborough’s sad tale and it could get worse in next Tuesday’s game at Southend United. The home side are hardly world beaters but have claimed some notable scalps already this season. Despite the fact that Southend are down the table in fifteenth, and have lost their last two games, this is a very winnable game and a home win is nicely priced at around the 7/5 mark.
Prediction: Southend United to win
Doncaster Rovers v Portsmouth. Doncaster Rovers have been hovering just above the relegation zone for most of the season while next Tuesday’s opponents Portsmouth have been attempting to break into the top six. Doncaster’s recent record of three defeats in four games does not compare favourably with Pompey’s return of three victories in their last four outings. The bookies make little distinction in pricing for the home and away wins which would suggest a draw is a strong possibility but form is usually the deciding factor and that makes an away win for Portsmouth the best bet at odds of 15/8.
Prediction: Portsmouth to win
Blackburn Rovers v Plymouth Argyle. One win and nine defeats in thirteen matches is Plymouth Argyle’s dismal record this season as the club sits two points adrift at the foot of the table. This Tuesday Argyle travel to face Blackburn Rovers, who are tenth in the table, in a game that the struggling side must go all out to win. That looks unlikely given Argyle’s results to date and even a draw would seem improbable on current form. Blackburn are hardly the most difficult of opponents but should still be good enough to register a third win in four games at not unreasonable odds of 4/9.
Prediction: Blackburn Rovers to win
Blackpool v Bury. Draw at 5/2
Milton Keynes Dons v Walsall. Draw at 5/2
Rochdale v Northampton Town. Rochdale to win at 8/11
Scunthorpe United v Fleetwood Town. Fleetwood to win 11/4
