20:45 – Dimitri Van Den Bergh v Peter Wright Betting Tips
The 2021 World Matchplay final is expected to be a cracker tonight as we have two in-form players that will compete in front of a packed Blackpool Winter Gardens on Sunday night.
Defending champion Van den Bergh managed to qualify after defeating Krzysztof Ratajski for 17-9 in the semi-final. That final result was even more impressive if you consider that the Belgian’s ace was 6-2 down at one point. Reaching the final for the second year in a row is a huge achievement for the ‘Dream Maker’ who had to overcome world number one Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals as well. Before the start of this tournament, there were questions marks as if he would cope with a vast crowd, but it is clear that he has answered all those questions. In fact, Van den Bergh has probably benefitted from the atmosphere and, despite the match against Price showed some weaknesses, he deserves immense respect for what he has done in this tournament.
Said that, if Wright plays as he did against Michael van Gerwen in the semi-final, there will be nothing that Van den Bergh or any other player can do to stop him. ‘Snakebite’ was simply sensational with an average of 110.37, which allowed him to secure a 17-10 win. We said in yesterday’s preview that MVG hasn’t been in top form in this tournament, yet he produced a great performance against Wright, but even that wasn’t enough. Wright is coming into this final in excellent form, having also won the last two Super Series tournaments. After struggling to find the form in most of the Premier League, he has now peaked at the right time, and it is difficult to see how he can be stopped now.
Indeed Van den Bergh has shown to be capable of defending his title successfully, but from a betting perspective, we cannot ignore the form Wright is in right now. The win over Van Gerwen was one of his best performances ever, and even if he hasn’t been at his top during the Premier League, he has still managed a draw (6-6) and an 8-5 win over Van den Bergh. Since this match is played at the best of 35 legs, so backing Wright to prevail in the handicap market looks the best value in our opinion.
