Coral Cup Betting Preview & Tips

Day 2 – Wednesday 11th March 2020 – 2.50pm – Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle – Grade 3 – 2m5f

The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle is a grade 3 handicap hurdle in which favourites do not have a positive record. In fact, only one favourite has won in the last 17 years, and this makes it very difficult to predict. Lots of horses are coming to this race well handicapped, and lots have a chance of winning in what is usually a very open renewal. We have looked at the different options and come up with our preference for this year’s Coral Cup.

Our bet: STRATUM

Stratum has already won a big handicap race even if that was on the flat for his connections. He has won two of his nine starts over hurdles, with the most prestigious being the Cesarewitch at Newmarket back in October. Surely representing Willie Mullins’ he has to be taken seriously off a handicap mark of 145. There are many dangers in the field with the main threats that are McManus-owned pair, Birchdale and Dame de Compagnie.

Our Verdict: Stratum

Coral Cup History

There are normally lots of competitors that are taking part in the Coral Cup. The race is over a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs, and there are ten hurdles to overcome. Horses that are four and over can compete in what is a Grace 3 race that has a prize pot of £75,000.

Different trainers have been able to succeed in the Coral Cup in recent times, but it is Martin Pipe who is dominating this race with three wins. He also won on the 1993 inaugural race. As far as jockeys are concerned, it is Barry Geraghty who is leading the way with two wins, one of which was on board of Spirit River in 2010.
