Even if this is not a major, we have a top field this week. Matches are played at the best of 11 from the quarters, so usually the best players are proceeding. Ronnie O’Sullivan has been shining here as in five attempts has won three times and lost two finals.
There is value in backing Kyren Wilson to win Group 4. Although he has reached the world final, bookmakers haven’t really adjusted the odds on him, perhaps on the back of a disappointing performance in the final. He shouldn’t be underestimated though as he is a winner and in 2018 was very unlucky to lose in the final against Ronnie.
There is also value in backing Gilbert who has got into this tournament at the last minute, and if things go on his way, he can find the spark to his career. After all, he has done very well during majors, so can surely repeat himself here.
This is a tournament that Trump hasn’t yet won, but it is difficult to see him going all the way. He has won at the English Open, but his form is still below compared with the standards of last season. He is the man to beat together with Ronnie O’Sullivan, but indeed he is very beatable, and at the current price there is surely much better value elsewhere.
We believe that backing Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert to win their respective groups is the best bet at the moment in what is a tournament that, despite not being a major, has a strong field and many committed protagonists.
