Main Bet: Richie Ramsay To Win

Last week’s British Masters brought a whirlwind of excitement to golf enthusiasts as South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence secured an impressive victory. Backed with an 80/1 win, Lawrence continued his triumphant journey, replicating the glory of his 33/1 European Masters win. The final round proved to be challenging yet exhilarating, with Lawrence swapping eight birdies with five bogeys and narrowly missing opportunities to break the par at both the 16th and 18th holes.

The Belfry: A Historic Golf Course

The next stop on our golfing journey takes us to The Belfry, nestled in Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands. The Brabazon Course at The Belfry played a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup resurgence in the 1980s. Despite its somewhat featureless start in the 1970s, the course is now a common hub for the DP World Tour.

Today, The Belfry has transformed into a well-wooded property, with many holes offering an isolated playing experience. The course’s narrow design, coupled with tricky drives, often rules out birdie and even par opportunities for errant drivers. A player’s approach needs to be razor-sharp, with some holes requiring aggressive attacks while others necessitate patience and robust course management.

Course Quirks and Challenges

The Belfry possesses its share of quirks, featuring only three short holes and three long ones. Players must exhibit fearlessness in the face of water hazards, particularly at the par-5 third, where a close approach to the lake allows for an aggressive second shot that flies entirely over the water. Holes six, eight, and the final hole also demand bold drives to overcome the water hazards.

Spotlight on Richie Ramsay

Shifting our focus to the players, our primary bet lies on Richie Ramsay. In 2009, the Scotsman Ramsay made his professional debut in England, scoring a remarkable 63 on a Thursday at Worsley Park in a Challenge Tour event. This marked the start of Ramsay’s love for a cross-border raid. Since then, he has secured top 10 finishes at multiple venues such as Wentworth, Close House, Hillside, and the London Club.

Ramsay’s Performance at The Belfry

In the last year’s Belfry tournament, Ramsay secured a remarkable third place, marking his third cut in three course appearances. He consistently stayed within the top four throughout the week. Later, Ramsay claimed a victory in the Cazoo Classic at Hillside, demonstrating his prowess and consistency.

Returning to The Belfry this year is likely to invoke memories of last year’s near success for Ramsay. Simultaneously, the recent Amateur Championship at Hillside should serve as a reminder of his previous triumph. Additionally, Ramsay has demonstrated commendable form recently, achieving seventh at Rinkven International in the Soudal Open, T39th at Bernardus in the KLM Open, and fifth in the Scandinavian Mixed.
