Australian PGA Championship scaled - Australian PGA Championship Betting

The Australian PGA Championship is the last event of the year, and Cameron Smith will be trying to secure his third consecutive Australian PGA title. From a golf betting point of view, this has been labelled at the most predictable tournament in world golf. This is because, apart from some rare exceptions in the last years, almost every winner was among the betting market leaders. One of the reasons for this is the inevitable gulf in class between the top favourites and the rest. In fact, only 10 of the world’s top 200 players will make the trip to the Royal Pines Resort.

Amongst them, there are two members of the International team who were defeated last week in the Presidents Cup. Adam Scott and Cameron Smith will be looking to make amends on home soil and forget that defeat. Our golf betting experts have previewed this tournament for you below and provide their best golf tips

Will Smith manage the pressure and secure the hat-trick?

Cameron Smith will be looking to become the first golf player to win the Australian PGA Championship for three times in a row since Dan Soutar did the same 114 years ago. Surely that will add more pressure on Smith’s shoulders. Despite a few missed cut at the Australian Open, Adam Scott, in our opinion, is the best player in this field and the real one to beat here.

First Verdict: Adam Scott To Win PGA Championship

Cameron Champ Might Struggle here

Even if there are many absentees, there is no shortage of top potential on show in this tournament. One of those is Cameron Champ, and another one is Calum Hill. Both might be paying the lack of experience in dealing with Australian conditions, and we are skipping them. In addition to that Champ’s power will not suit well this firm and fast course.

The exact the same thing can be said for the likes of Min Woo Lee, Ryan Fox and Lucas Herbert. Fox has failed to do anything better than a ninth position in the sixth visits to Royal Pines, and we don’t think the trend will change this year.

Jason Scrivener has very good chances. He has been very consistent in the last seven top tournaments where he made the top 30 in all but one. He is an excellent iron player and likely to be in the frame. His odds are not great tough as 11/1 looks short for a player who has only won a tournament before, in a significantly low grade.

Ormsby European Form Is Good

If we continue to look down in the betting market, we can spot some interesting each-way value. Players who have experience of Australian conditions do have an edge here. Wade Ormsby made it all the way on this track and was only defeated in a play-off in 2014. In 2017 he finished in ninth place.

Ormsby is a short-hitter and usually finishes quite behind on the Euro Tour. This summer, however, he has performed rather well and was contending strongly at Crans Sur Sierre. He also finished second at the Victorian Open. We believe a place is within reach for him.

Second Verdict: Ormsby To Win PGA Championship (Each Way)

Steward Cink To Shine At Royal Pines

Steward Cink has been in good form in the PGA Tour and surely demands respect at 50/1. The ex Open Champion has managed to finish in the top 20 in that major earlier in the year and was also 4th at the previous year’s PGA. A downside for him is that he doesn’t have Aussie form, but when on a good day, can deliver on this type of firm course.

David Micheluzzi shouldn’t have issues of playing in those conditions. The youngster was Australia’s best amateur and managed to place in their Open last winter. We have seen already brilliant youngsters making an impact at pro level, so it has to be considered in the each-way market.

Lastly, a couple of options with worldwide form. Hugo Leon has been playing great golf from tee to green in all the second part of the European Tour season. American Johannes Veerman ended 7th at Leopard Creek and did well on his penultimate tournament in Mauritius.

First Verdict: Steward Cink To Win PGA Championship
