There comes a time when embracing a fresh perspective might just be the way forward. The Winston-Salem Open provides a glaring case in point. A series of dark horse picks, with tempting odds, finding themselves in an advantageous position yet failing at the crucial juncture, hasn’t helped our case. Hubert Hurkacz, pegged at 66/1, had a golden opportunity in his Cincinnati semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz but squandered a match point and a commanding 4-1 lead.

Such anomalies have been a recurring theme recently. Backing outsiders is a risky business.

The Mental Edge

The adage “90% of tennis is mental” rings true, even if the exact percentage can be debated. Consider Hurkacz’s recent performance: despite having multiple opportunities, he couldn’t secure a victory.

Conversely, the mental resilience demonstrated by legends like Novak Djokovic and upcoming talents like Carlos Alcaraz explains their consistent success. They don’t always play their best shots at crucial moments, but their ability to capitalise on an opponent’s mental lapse is unparalleled.

Rethinking Betting Strategies

So, should we keep opposing these mentally robust players? The allure of high returns from outsiders is tempting, but how often do they deliver? Players like Djokovic and Alcaraz might not offer the most enticing odds, but their reliability is undeniable.

This week, neither Djokovic nor Alcaraz are competing at the Winston-Salem. The field lacks any top 10 contenders, making the tournament an open race. Borna Coric, the only top-20 player, is the frontrunner, but I’d be hesitant to back him. With the US Open looming, would Coric risk fatigue or injury by pushing hard in Winston-Salem?

Potential Contenders

The focus shifts to players eager to make a mark, those not distracted by the upcoming Grand Slam. A proven track record on hardcourts, fresh legs, and a history of performing well before a major tournament are ideal attributes.

Marcos Giron, the American contender, ticks several of these boxes. His recent performance in Toronto and a series of commendable runs before Grand Slams make him a likely candidate. However, his commitment to the US Open might divide his attention.

Instead, I’m placing my chips on ALEKSANDAR VUKIC, priced at 18/1. Vukic has had a stellar 2023, cementing his position in the top 50. His impressive serve, combined with favourable conditions in Winston-Salem, should give him an edge.

Concluding Thoughts

The Winston-Salem Open serves as a reminder to revisit and refine our betting strategies. While it’s tempting to back the outsiders, perhaps a more balanced approach, taking into account the mental aspect of the game, could yield better results. This week’s picks, Vukic and Shevchenko, embody this new perspective. Only time will tell if this shift in strategy pays dividends.
