Main Bet: Tyrrell Hatton

Nothing compares to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a competition that is simultaneously magnificent and insane.
First-pick Tyrrell Hatton didn’t impress during his first three tournament appearances, missing the cut each time. But since then, he’s had a phenomenal record.

In 2016 he won by four, while in 2017 he won on defense by three.
He had a one-shot lead with 18 holes to go in 2018 and appeared poised to make it three straight, but he finished the week in second place, a feat he also accomplished in 2017. (after having the halfway lead).
He placed 15th in the interim in 2019.

It’s an excellent record, and he also has a strong record on the DP World Tour. In his last 60 starts at that level, he has 18 top-seven finishes, including six victories. Additionally, he’s placed eighth four more times, most recently in the Italian Open (when he was 68th after a first-round 72).

Each Way Bet: Matthew Southgate

This week, I really didn’t intend to be a fan of Matthew Southgate.
He has been in good shape and was the event’s previous runner-up. I figured that would be reflected in his price, so I could move on.
The final round score of 76 in last week’s Open de France was the result of a sixth week on the road. So, for this particular test, I can’t miss him because he’s three figures.

He enjoys his membership at Carnoustie and has many friends there. He most likely has a deeper understanding of it than any professional.
He won the 2010 Links Trophy in St. Andrews, adding to his winning credentials.

His linksland background also includes a minor tour victory at Royal St. George’s, a first-time experience competing at this level at Castle Stuart, a second-place finish at Portstewart, a ninth-place finish at The Renaissance Club, a 12th place finish at Royal Troon, and a sixth place finish at Royal Birkdale in the Open.

It was also the second time in this tournament that he led for a good portion of the final round before a late slip-up and Victor Perez’s steadiness denied him the victory. He began this month by participating in the Sunday final group, where he witnessed Oliver Wilson’s victory in Denmark. If he can combine that experience with his knowledge of the close call, he can compete once more and looks like a brilliant each-way punt for this week.
