Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Preview

Following 3/1 and 9/2 winners yesterday, Steve Ryder previews the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle on the final day of the Cheltenham festival. P&L +12.43pts.

2:50 Cheltenham- Birchdale 11/2 (0.5pt ew)

Birchdale hasn’t got the stereotypical profile for winning the Albert Bartlett given his relative inexperience but I am hoping that class can prevail in the race this year. He won his PTP well over 3 miles before making his debut at Warwick over 2m5f. He was held up by Barry Geraghty that day and would have learned a lot before pulling four lengths clear at the finish. Birchdale was then stepped up into Grade 2 company at Cheltenham on trials day where he was alongside Brewinupastorm at the last when his rival fell. The form of that run has been boosted by that rival running well in a strong renewal of the Ballymore on Wednesday and given he pulled 18 lengths clear of the remainder that day would give you hope that he could be something special.

Barry Geraghty has chosen to ride Birchdale over Dickie Diver in this race which looks significant and he should run well with four (and five with one firm) places on offer.
