After a 7/2 (Rule 4 10p) winner and a couple of second place finishes yesterday, Steve Ryder previews the racing for Day 5 of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Saturday 5th August. P&L +1.84pts
1:50 Son Of Africa 16/1 ew
Son Of Africa is the selection in the Stewards Cup consolation race. Draw has been a huge factor over the last couple of days with a low draw crucial. Son Of Africa is drawn 3 and has C&D form from 2014. He won the Nursery Handicap on the card as a 2 year old on Good to Firm ground on his only run at the course. The ground is improving all the time and it wouldn’t surprise me if it turns to Good to Soft in places at some stage tomorrow so this shouldn’t inconvenience him. His last victory was in a handicap at Sandown in August last season off a mark of 93 and he runs tomorrow off a mark of 92. He may be worth chancing at a big price from a good draw on a winnable mark.
2:25 Platitude 10/1 ew
Platitude won a listed race over C&D at last year under Andrea Atzeni and the pair are reunited today for the first time since in today’s race. This is the first time he drops back down into a handicap since finishing a good second at Royal Ascot in the King George V Stakes off a mark of 99 on soft ground. He is second top weight in this race but the fact he is proven on the ground and over C&D I feel he is a solid option at a double figure price.
3:00 Crystal Ocean 11/8 (2pt)
Sir Michael Stoute usually targets this race with future Group 1 horses having won the contest with Conduit, Harbinger and Ulysses last year. This year he runs Crystal Ocean in the race after 3rd placed efforts in both the Dante Stakes and the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. His main market rival, Khalidi, finished a length ahead of him at Royal Ascot but that was Khalidi’s 10th run compared to Crystal Ocean’s 4th. Sir Michael Stoute likes to bring his middle distance horses along slowly so it is very likely that Crystal Ocean will keep improving throughout the season and he rates a confident selection in this race with the other three in the line up needing to find about 10lbs on ratings.
3:35 Hoof It 25/1 (1pt ew)
There is no doubt that this rate has been Hoof It’s target since he won the consolation race on the card last season. Hoof It was a top class sprinter in 2011 when landing this race off a mark of 111. He then gradually dropped in the handicap all the way down to 91 when winning a handicap at Haydock last season. He then won the consolation race at this meeting before a superb 3rd place in the Ayr Gold Cup at the end of last season. He has been dropped 2lb by the handicapper for his reappearance race and comes into this race off a mark of 98, only 3lb higher than when winning the consolation race last year. He has a perfect draw in stall 4 unlike many of the fancied runners at the top of the market who all seem to be drawn high. Off a workable mark and with obvious C&D form I think Hoof It rates a solid ew option from a superb draw. Check ew terms with bookmakers as the place terms range from 4 places to 7 places with some bookmakers in this race!
4:10 Dee Ex Bee 4/1 (1pt ew)
With Ryan Moore winning the first three races yesterday and being on the horse with best previous form, Bathsheba Bay is sure to be popular with punters. However, I feel it worth taking a chance on Mark Johnston’s newcomer Dee Ex Bee in this race. The trainer has won this race twice in the last ten years and had an impressive debut winner here on Wednesday for the same owners. Although 4/1 is still available at this time, he has been well backed with some firms and is as short as 11/4 in a place. The fact he has entries in Group races later in the season would give further encouragement that Dee Ex Bee is working well at home and will give a good account of himself in this race.
4:45 Taamol 15/8 (1pt)
Taamol disappointed on his last start in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot on Good to Firm ground but that only confirms the thought that he needs cut in the ground to show his best. He won his debut on soft ground impressively at Newmarket before proving slightly disappointing on good ground and on the AW after. He then put in a career best performance when winning a strong listed race over 7f on Good to Soft ground at Newmarket in May. Taamol will get his ideal conditions today and I feel he will be up to defying top weight in this handicap before stepping back into Group company.
5:20 Interconnection 12/1 ew
Interconnection is a prominent racer who is drawn to attack from Stall 1 in this race. He is a very uncomplicated horse who should prove an easy ride for 7lb claimer Stephen Cummins in this apprentice handicap. Goodwood is renowned for its troubled passages coming from off the pace so Interconnection should be able to keep out of trouble by either making the running or racing prominently in this race. He is effective on ground softer than good, has won over the trip and comes into the race in form after two placed efforts at Newmarket and Yarmouth. He looks a solid ew selection at a double figure price.
